A TRIBUTE TO TREVOR HEMMINGS

It was with great sadness that my good friend Trevor Hemmings passed away at his Isle of Man home some 6 weeks ago. The horse racing world and National Hunt racing in particular shared the sadness of the passing of one of the best supporters the sport has ever seen. It was clear to see at his memorial last week what he meant to the sport and everyone who knew him.

Myself and the team here at Jackdaws Castle had the privilege of training horses owned by Trevor for many years and we enjoyed some great successes and witnessed those famous green, yellow and white colours entering the winners enclosure on so many occasions.

Trevor was passionate about National Hunt Racing and was very involved in the purchase of new stock and took great delight in watching the youngsters develop over the years. Of all the horses I trained for Trevor  Albertas Run is certainly the one to evoke the greatest memories.  He was quite simply a superstar, to win first time out on his bumper, hurdle and chase debuts is testimony to the horses ability and he went on to deliver at the highest level. In a career spanning 10 years he ran 36 times recording 15  victories including 3 at the Cheltenham Festival and amassing over £900,000 in prize money and of course won 3 times at Trevor’s beloved Aintree.

The memory of those victories will stay with me for ever and I was honoured to play a small part in seeing Trevor enjoy the rewards of his tremendous investment and commitment to our great sport. To stand alongside him in the winners enclosure was a fantastic feeling and to feel the warmth shown towards Trevor from the crowd around the enclosure was both uplifting and humbling, National Hunt racegoers are some of the most knowledgeable in our sport and they recognised Trevor as one of their own. A man from humble beginnings who worked incredibly hard and was able to enjoy success in his favourite sport.

Trevor was never seen without his favoured Cloth Cap and it is an honour for me to train the horse that carries that name. With wins last season at Newbury and Kelso the horse had an excellent chance of adding to the owners 3 victories in a race Trevor valued above all others , the Randox Grand National but sadly it was not  be.  I am sure Trevor will be looking down as Cloth Cap carries his famous colours again this season.

Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to see “Cloth Cap” in the winners enclosure once again and allow us all to remember a remarkable man who did so much for our sport and whose legacy lives on.

Thank you Trevor, you will never be forgotten

A SOLID START TO THE SEASON

The horses are all in great form and it's been nice to see many running well on the track and lots of winners too.

We have enjoyed 40 winners so far this season and passed £300,000 in prize money, with an 18% winning strike rate which is very pleasing.

We are looking forward to a drop of rain to get more horses on the track.

TURNING CHELTENHAM YELLOW FOR TIGGY

Cheltenham Racecourse will be enveloped in a sea of yellow on Friday December 10th for the launch of Tiggy’s Trust at its International meeting.

Tiggy Hancock tragically died in a riding accident in June 2021 aged just 15, whilst at team training for the Pony European Eventing Championships. She was from Co Carlow in Ireland, one of three daughters to Frank and Jane Hancock, both English who have lived in Ireland for some years.

Tiggy’s Trust is a charitable foundation set up in Tiggy Hancock’s memory. The race day will include The Tiggy’s Trust Novices’ Steeple Chase at 12.40 and a sizeable fundraising effort at the course to which 700 plus guests will attend including 20-time Champion jockey, Sir Anthony McCoy, eventing Olympian gold medallist, Laura Collett, and former multiple Irish Champion jockey Ruby Walsh.

Tiggy’s favourite colour, yellow, has been emblazoned by equestrians across the world over the past six months to commemorate her short inspirational life and Cheltenham will embrace this theme by ‘turning yellow’ on this day.

Tiggy’s Trust will use the funds raised to assist young people both by offering mental health support, through recognized organizations, to those who need it, and also providing training and education to help young aspiring equestrians achieve their goals. A proportion of the funds raised on the day will also go to the Injured Jockeys Fund and the Pony Racing Authority, two organisations close to Tiggy’s family’s heart and ethos.

SNOW AT JACKDAWS CASTLE

If you have been following us on social media, you will have seen that the snow arrived to Jackdaws Castle this week.

Our team battled through the elements in fine style, and were greeted with a blizzard, with a wind chill of -11 degrees, on Saturday morning. It made for some spectacular photographs that were shared by many people and publications and have been seen over a million times across social media!

RACING CLUB VISIT

It looked more like Courchevel than the Cotswolds for the latest visit from the Jonjo O'Neill Racing Club members.

After a tour around the yard, the group ventured out onto the gallops to watch When You're Ready working, before heading back inside for a much-needed hot drink and breakfast!
