JONJO O'NEILL RACING
★  ★  ★ ★  ★

JANUARY NEWSLETTER 2022

We hope you have all had a lovely start to 2022.

We enjoyed some really good winners in December with Palmers Hill, Papa Tango Charly and Flight Deck all winning strong races.

It was great to get off to a flying start with Judicial Law, our first runner of the new year, winning impressively at Exeter for Mrs Gay Smith. Gay is long time supporter of ours and great friend. From spending our honeymoon with herself and Derrick to now, 25 years later,  giving her winners is very special for us.

I was thrilled to see Jonjo Jr. ride his first ever Grade 1 aboard Champ in the prestigious Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot just before Christmas. We all see how hard he works and how much he wanted a Grade 1, and it was nice to see him win one in the green and gold hoops of JP McManus.

It was also brilliant to see Kevin Brogan ride a big winner last weekend. He's been with us since September 2020 and is a huge asset to the team. Fingers crossed he can stay at the top of the Conditional Jockeys Championship table until the end of the season.

The weather has taken its toll on a few of our runners recently. January has gone from very wet and heavy to fixtures being hampered by the frost, so it's been a little stop start.

As you will see below, we have been busy creating a new endurance track for the horses to reach the bottom of the gallops. This is a great asset as it will protect the gallops from increased footfall.

Best wishes,

Jonjo

A Super Sunday at Carlisle
DECEMBER 12TH

It was a super Sunday up at Carlisle with Papa Tango Charly and Flight Deck completing a quick-fire double in the hands of Nick Scholfield and Jonjo Jr. respectively.

Papa Tango Charly travelled strongly throughout and led going easily to 2 out. He stayed on strongly in the final 110 yards when faced with some competition to win by half a length.

Huge congratulations to Martin and Iwona!

Flight Deck made hard work of his victory. Sitting for most of the race in midfield, he was pushed along and ridden before 2 out, Even at the last, his chances of winning looked slim but he kept on very well for a  1¼ victory.

Many congratulations to owner JP McManus.

File Illico victorious at Wetherby
JANUARY 7TH

Jonjo Jr. produced another high-class ride to get File Illico over the line in front at Wetherby.

After joining the lead 3-out, a couple of jumping errors left them 3-lengths down in the run in with, what looked like,  little chance of troubling the leader. They never stopped trying and finally found more in the final furlong to get up by half a length.

We are thrilled for owner The Honourable Mrs Elizabeth Wills.

NEW ENDURANCE TRACK

We are always looking of ways to improve the facilities here at Jackdaws Castle, and we are delighted with our new endurance track for the horses to walk from the top of the gallops to the bottom.

The walk takes them through the wood and down along the hedgeline adjacent to our 5-furlong gallop. They will then walk past our paddocks where they will reach the bootom of the gallop.

This will significantly increase the life of our gallops as the horses will no longer need to walk back down them.

A huge thank you to Nigel Wilks and Tom O'Neill for all of their incredible work.

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH

Congratulations to Tirana Jakupi who has been awarded our Employee of the Month.

Tirana works on the yard and also travels with the horses to the races.

TEAM WILD WAVES

We have been following the progress of Team Wild Waves in their bid to row the Atlantic in aid of Shelter and Women's Aid in The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.

Part of the team is Jess, daughter of our owner Germaine Hitchins, and her friend Charlotte Harris.

The challenge, that started at the beginning December 2021 has taken them more than 3000 miles west from the Canary Islands to Anitgua & Barbuda.

After some 44 days at sea the end is now in sight and the girls are due to arrive in Antigua today (Wednesday 26th January).

Their performance has been stellar - despite some very difficult weather conditions (involving 20ft waves, high winds, their boat cap-sizing and the chocolate running out at the end of week 2) they have managed to stay upbeat and focused throughout.

They are some 240 miles ahead of their nearest rivals which is very impressive.

They have raised almost £40,000 so far and are aiming to reach their £100,000 target.
