Richie McLernon Jockey

Richie McLernon – Jockey

Richie McLernon has proved himself one of the best jockeys in the country as part of our team of top riders.

He was the toast of Jackdaws Castle when he landed a second win for Holywell at the Cheltenham Festival – the third winner at the showpiece meeting of his career.

The latest win was in the Baylis & Harding Handicap Chase, following the previous win in the Pertemps Hurdle Final. On both occasions, Richie swept into the lead jumping the final obstacle and powered clear to win by a length and three quarters.

Paying tribute to Richie afterwards, Jonjo said: "He's lovely horseman, a brilliant lad, and I'm thrilled to bits for him – he gave the horse a great ride.

"The horse travelled well and jumped well."

Richie had achieved every jump jockey's ambition when he rode his first Festival winner aboard Alfie Sherrin for Jonjo.

Earlier last season, Richie gave John's Spirit a similar ride to land the Paddy Power Gold Cup following up on a win over course and distance in October.

A nephew of former two-time champion jockey in Ireland Tommy Carmody, he wanted to be a jockey from an early age but his parents insisted he stayed at school in case his racing career didn't work out.

Looking back, he said: "That was my parents' one wish, they said I had to finish school and I'm delighted I did now.

"If you're good enough, you'll still make it and if you don't you've got something to fall back on."

Richie has certainly 'made it' with Jonjo and looks a jump jockey with a big future.
