CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL NEWSLETTER 2022

It's that time of year once again, the anticipation of Cheltenham is upon us.

Our week kicks off once again with Alan Brazil hosting the TalkSport Breakfast Show from our Owner's Suite which is always great fun and a brilliant way to start the week.

I love welcoming all of our owners and guests each morning to Jackdaws Castle. The atmosphere is always electric and it's nice to see everyone in high spirits enjoying some champagne and canapes!

We will hopefully have 6-8 runners across the week with a couple of live chances.

Petit Tonnerre goes to the Fred Winter, nearly off top weight which isn't ideal but he goes in good health and we hope for a good showing. A winner at Market Rasen, he would need to improve from that run. He will be a nice horse for the next few seasons.

Although he has a few entries, Garry Clermont will most likely go for the Coral Cup. We think it will suit him as he's a little quirky and the hustle and bustle of this handicap will be right up his street.

Easysland goes back to his old stomping ground on the Wednesday and we are looking forward to seeing how he goes there. He loves Cheltenham and he goes in good health.

Sky Pirate goes back to try and retain his title in the Grand Annual on the Wednesday. He will go off at a similar price and will hopefully be in the mix once again. He's ran well all season in some graded races and being back in handicap company he won't be without a chance.

Coeur Serein goes for the Pertemps Final on Thursday. He started off chasing this season and was unlucky to fall when in front at Lingfield first time out. He has since reverted back to hurdling and will hopefully give a good account of himself.

For such a fragile horse, Palmers Hill has had his most productive season to date, running 3 times and winning twice. He will run in the Paddy Power Plate and , although he's a little exposed, he will still be in with a chance.

A winner at Cheltenham is always incredibly special and we will keep our fingers crossed that we can have another this year, but most of all come back safe and sound.

We wish you all a wonderful Cheltenham Festival however you are following it.

Take care and best wishes,

Jonjo

OUR FESTIVAL TEAM

Our team of Cheltenham horses are cared for by members of our incredible team here at Jackdaws Castle.

Here are their thoughts on each of the horses they look after.

PETIT TONNERRE
GEORGIA PLUMB

Petit Tonnerre is a true gentleman. He is an exciting prospect to have on the yard and is definitely a yard favourite to ride. He is a very talented horse at home with tonnes of character. I am privileged to look after a horse with such potential and definitely looking forward to seeing him excel at Cheltenham Festival. I’m excited for the future with him.

GARRY CLERMONT
JOHN DINA

My friend Florin used to look after him and when he left in 2020 I start to look after him.

He is a nice young horse and won for me at Warwick. I have taken him to Ascot three times where he has run brilliantly each time, finishing second and third.

Garry loves cuddles all the time and he is really sweet. I really hope he will win at Cheltenham!

EASYSLAND
JOHN DINA

I started to look after him when he arrived at Jackdaws Castle, so I haven’t had him for long. I enjoy spending time with him on the yard and especially enjoy swimming him as he’s very good and tries hard.

He is a really nice horse to look after at home but at the races he is a completely different horse. He gets very excited and drags me around the parade ring!

I've never led up a horse in the Cross Country and I’m so excited to be there with him on Wednesday. Fingers crossed for a good run and let’s hope he will repeat his win from 2020.

SKY PIRATE
LAUREN HAY

I’ve looked after Sky Pirate from the day I started at Jonjo’s 4 years ago. He is one of the sweetest natured horses I’ve dealt with. To look after him is a huge privilege and every time he runs he never fails to have me screaming him home.

Cheltenham festival last year when he won the Grand Annual nearly brought me to tears. I cannot explain in words how proud I was of him.

He loves and enjoys his job and  always gets plenty of carrots and cuddles every day. As long as he comes home safe from his races that’s all that matters to me, because to me he’s always a winner!

COEUR SEREIN
LILLY WHALE

Coeur Serein was one of the first horses I rode at Jonjos and since then he has always been one of my favourites. When I finally got the opportunity to look after him, I was beyond excited.

He is such a gentleman to deal with in every way and he never fails to try his best in all of his races. He is most definitely adored by everyone on the yard but most importantly he is always going to be my number one!

PALMERS HILL
JOHN DINA

I’ve looked after Palmers Hill since 2017. He is my favorite horse ever and gave me the best day in racing in November 2018 when Jonjo Jr. won on him at Cheltenham. He then gave me my first ever winner at Ascot this season which was amazing!

He is a very nice looking horse and very grumpy at the same time and I look forward to taking him to Cheltenham on Thursday. I hope he will run well.

HORSES FOR SALE

We have been busy at the sales recently and have two smart horses available to purchase.

Please email us on racingoffice@jonjooneillracing.com for further information about either of the horses for sale.

MARK THE MAN (IRE)

This son of Valirann made his way from a mid-division position to improve on the turn for home. He continued his progression towards two out to make an effort to challenge before the last. Whilst still a few lengths down at this stage he was drawing clear from the other challengers when unseating the rider at the final fence. At this stage in the race he had done enough for any reasonable judge to gain comfort that he holds considerable talent and promise and will be a very talented sort when embarking on a track career. He is a brother to a winner and the page traces back to some smart stayers on the level suggesting he has the class to progress to a high level.

TIME FOR A PINT (IRE)

A smart sort who was third on debut in a decent looking Turtulla maiden. He then followed up at Tyrella with success on just his second start. While he did pass the post in second on this occasion it is only fair to note that the winner did not draw the correct weight when returning suggesting this fellow was very much the winner on merit and deserves his winning bracket in full. He is clearly progressive and looks the sort who could drop back in trip and remain most effective as he retains a turn of foot. He is from the family of the high class Cotton Call.

RACHAEL BLACKMORE: A GRAND YEAR

The Rachael Blackmore documentary is being broadcast on ITV 1 on Monday March 14th at 10.25pm.

The film crew and producers visiting Jackdaws Castle last year to capture all of AP McCoy's features within the documentary.

The documementary was broadcast on RTÉ in Ireland over Christmas and it got a great reaction so be sure to tune in!
