John was brought up on a farm near Midhurst in West Sussex, where his father was Master of the Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt. From an early age, he was involved with show jumping and Pony Club games. John became a Conditional Jockey with Derek Kent, then Peter Haynes in the early 1980's, riding against Jonjo. He was third in the title and successfully rode out his claim, his biggest win coming on Mr Foodbroker in the Haig Whisky Final at Chepstow.
John has worked as Head Lad in several yards including those of Roland O'Sullivan, Richard Rowe, John Sheehan, Tony Newcombe and Stuart Kittow. As a hobby, he rides show hunters.
Jonjo originally contacted John to see if he might consider joining his team back in the days he was training near Penrith so was delighted when this finally happened in September 2016. With pet-hates of "lateness and rudeness", John's experience and high standards add further strength to Team Jackdaws where, as one of the Head Lads, he takes particular responsibility for the covered barn of 40 horses.
"What has immediately impressed me is the calibre of the horses, the enthusiasm of Jonjo and Guy, the quality of the facilities which are jaw-dropping and the buzz around the place".
